New Zealand’s electricity grid is heading into a critical period. According to a new Security of Supply Assessment released by Transpower, the risk of national electricity shortages — and even blackouts — is expected to rise significantly starting in winter 2026.
The cause? A combination of compounding challenges across the energy sector.
Transpower points to a faster-than-expected decline in domestic gas production, especially from the Pohokura field, and delays in delivering large-scale renewable energy projects. These developments are reducing the country’s ability to respond to energy shortfalls during times of peak demand — particularly in winter, when hydro lakes may be low and wind production inconsistent.
The grid operator stresses that while no power cuts are currently planned, the margin for error is shrinking. New Zealand’s energy system has relied for decades on a mix of renewable sources backed up by gas-fired generation. With this backup eroding and demand steadily increasing, the risk of involuntary power interruptions is real.
Transpower’s analysis shows that by mid-2026, the energy system may not have enough reliable backup to handle high-demand days — particularly when hydro lakes are low or wind generation is down. A lack of “firm” generation means that any shortfall in supply could lead to power outages or controlled load shedding.
For businesses, farms, essential services, and even households, this warning is more than a forecast — it’s a prompt to act. At Shape Energy, we believe in building resilience now, not reacting later. That’s why we offer New Zealand scalable backup power and energy storage solutions, future-ready solutions.
This risk highlights the urgent need for supplementary, decentralised energy solutions.
Energy Utility Supply Station
Our modular Powerblok systems are engineered for exactly this kind of grid instability. These scalable battery energy storage systems (BESS) allow businesses and communities to:
Store excess energy when generation is high
Deploy power instantly when the grid is under pressure
Reduce peak load on the grid, supporting national resilience
Whether you’re a business looking to protect operations or a council preparing for community needs, Powerblok provides scalable, long-life backup when it matters most.
Powerblok Real world applications
When storage isn’t enough or instant generation is required, our range of generators ensures reliable power on demand:
Diesel generators from 5kVA to 500kVA and above
Marine and industrial models available
Remote start, monitoring, and full installation support
These systems are crucial for hospitals, food processors, data centers, and essential services — all of which can’t afford to be offline during a power emergency.
